Marithé + François Girbaud is a French fashion house founded by designers François Girbaud and Marithé Bachellerie in 1972. The label is renowned for its experimental approach to denim – from pioneering treatments like stonewashing and laser engraving, to developing distinctive constructions and fits.
Marithé and François began working together in 1964 at Western House, a Paris clothing shop that imported utilitarian dark blue denim. Marithé and François began experimenting with Western House’s denim stock – washing jeans and jackets at local laundromats to soften, shrink and fade them. Without knowing it, the pair were the first to pre-wash denim prior to sale – effectively introducing artificially aged denim to consumers.
